The subtle power of everyday life.

This book is a subtle charmer. The writing is poetic, simple, and insightful as it chronicles the fictional life of a boy growing up on the banks of the Patuxent River during the middle of this century. While it's been compared to Huck Finn, Ebb of the River digs deeper into the issues of growing up in a mixed race society. Many of Ebb's experiences challenge the teachings of his family as he befriends a young black boy named Bo. Time and again he sees the dichotomy of black and white and tries to resolve the conflict with an innocent heart. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to be shaken out of their normal "New York Times Bestseller" rut. Richard Mears' Ebb of the River is a quiet and powerful story which should not be missed.
