What Has Changed?

In Easy Blood Mike Layton describes his travels through Central America and the different political upheaval going on during the 1980s and 1990s. Layton focuses mainly on Nicaragua and El Salvador because the United States financed the Contras against the Sandinistas in Nicaragua and the right-wing party in El Salvador. He does briefly describe the 1989 Panama invasion and some Panama and Costa Rica facts. Also he briefly discusses Guatemala and Honduras. Mike Layton's book is interesting, informative and even funny sometimes. Central America was a victim of the cold war with the Soviet Union and Cuba trying to use their influence in the region and the U.S. trying to push their influence in the region and scare everyone with the Communist domino effect theory. There is some history on each Central American country except Belize. Some parts of this book are sad such as where it mentions in 1986 the country of Nicaragua bought charges against the United States in the World Criminal Court. The World Criminal Court ruled against the United States in Nicaragua's favor. Immediately Ronald Reagan and the United States government decided the World Criminal Court was obsolete and ignored the ruling. Layton was a writer for a Seattle newspaper. He traveled extensively throughout Central America and saw political gatherings as well as talked to numerous locals throughout the area. His analysis, which is neither left, or right wing was criticized in letters to the editor by both sides. In the conclusion chapter (Tio Sam turns away) Layton says that it is in everyone's interest that we help Central America develop strong economies which will lead to less immigration - legal and illegal in the United States. In addition, a well-educated population leads to democratic, prosperous and peaceful nations. I read this book because I wanted some background on Central America and what the countries in that region went through during the 1980s. I felt this book gave a good account.
