Simply elegant

I have been knitting for more than thirty years and I have enjoyed this book with the basic designs. When knit in cashmere, the mittens and hats are adorable. The matinee coat was so easy to knit up but looks elegant. I have knit most everything in this book since I got it.

Excellent, simple, and clear

This book is excellent for what I would call "precocious beginners" (like me): that is, someone who is not an advanced knitter, but who is too impatient to practice on endless scarves and potholders! The patterns in this book are straightforward and clear, call for simple stitches, and require only a little finishing. But for all this simplicity, the results are very, very satisfying. The projects look absolutely beautiful as written, but they also lend themselves well to alterations and embellishments, making you *feel* like an expert (even when you are not). I have made several of the hats -- they work up easily in an evening or two -- and then I have added small crocheted flowers, ribbon or embroidery to make a lovely infant hat wardrobe and eliciting many compliments for my daughter. The same is true for the sweater and cardigan projects I have tried (which, of course, take a little longer); the wrap sweater and baby booties patterns, both knit in one piece, are particularly clever. Also, I have experimented with different yarns with very pleasing results -- the patterns are easy to adapt, as long as you maintain the right gauge (by changing your needle size to make up for your yarn weight, when necessary). All in all, this is one of the most satisfying and useful knitting books I own, and I imagine I will keep returning to it for the simple beauty of the patterns (and especially to make quick gifts for friends), even when I am a more advanced knitter.

Love this book

I really like this book. The designs are classic. I like the simple, uncluttered look, and that's what this book has. The patterns are easy, but don't have that "easy" look. I've read through most of the patterns, and feel that I could make anything in the book. Everything is done on 2 needles. Here's what the book includes: Baby Scarf Baby Papoose Simple Sweater Cotton and Wool Hats Simple Booties and Scratch Mitts Cotton Booties Wrap Top Baby Bonnet Cardigan Knitted Dress---I can't wait to make this for my new baby daughter Overalls Matinee Jacket Double Breasted Knit Coat Patchwork Blanket Naming Day Blanket Building Blocks Bird Mobile Special Baby Gift Bib Rabbit Soft Toy If you are a beginner to intermediate knitter you should be able to make the items in this book. I think even an advanced knitter would enjoy the patterns.

Sweet

My girlfriend is becoming a grandmother times 2 soon so I was looking at knitting books for a birthday gift for her. I became so enthralled with this book and its darling patterns that I purchased one for myself too! No babies on the way to this household but I couldn't resist.

Perfect for new knitters or those of us who like things simple

I picked up this book after buying a few others and getting even more from the library and this is the one I will be using for a long time. Why? 1. Cute but simple patterns (How many parents of small children really want a lace cardigan anyhow?) 2. Clear and easy directions with pictures that actually show you what the piece looks like. I dislike knitting books where the photos are so artistic it blurs detail. 3. Very little finishing needed as most of the patterns I've read through are done in one or two pieces.
