One of his generation's most accomplished poets, Robert Wrigley is renowned for his ironic, powerful, and lucid style as well as his ability to fuse narrative and lyrical impulses. Earthly Meditations features nineteen original poems alongside a collection of sixty-one poems chosen from his first six books.
He does the things that you can't learn in school. I understand what he means when he says, "I mean the sea and its enormous restraint," but I can't explain how I understand. He has found some angle in the words that we recognize. I give him less than five stars because I believe that he is deliberately modest, and has no interest in being Auden, or Eliot, or anything but what he is. That's enough for him and enough for me. These are only, and deliberately, "earthly meditations." The style isn't always the man, but this time it is. Fine poems.
Wonderful!

Robert Wrigley is an amazing poet. If you are looking for something that will give a good idea what he is about, this is it. I recently met him myself at reading. I highly recommend this book and to see him in read/talk.
