Some years ago, I remember watching a film about the life of a great explorer. Whilst he was being interviewed they switched to various pieces of film and photographs. At one point we were shown a fantastic photograph of men in the Arctic. It was a black and white photo and it really was a great shot. Apparently, it was a famous photograph which had been taken by the man being interviewed some time prior to the First World War. "How many photographs did you take just to get that one?" asked the interviewer. "Oh, just the one, I knew it would be alright." Came the reply. Such was the understanding of those early photographers that they knew exactly what they were capturing on film without the need for motor-drives, light meters and a variety of films with different speeds. In this book the author introduces us to a number of early wildlife photographers and their work. Their greatest legacy is the photographs which remain - and in some cases they are of species which are now extinct. It is a fascinating book which describes many of the hardships they had to endure. It also includes a number of photographs many people would be proud to have taken today - even allowing for all the fancy equipment that is now available. Overall a very good book and an immensely interesting read. NM
