When Sharon Nelson retired, after thirty years, at Josten's Diploma Division in Red Wing, she decided she needed a hobby. A few years ago, after seeing a photo of a store called the "Boston" in the Republican Eagle, Sharon's curiosity was piqued and she became interested in early businesses in downtown Red Wing. After spending many hours at the Goodhue County Historical Society looking through their albums of the early buildings in Red Wing, she decided her personal hobby would be researching early stores and businesses street by street. She researched the many newspaper films at the library, finding ads and information on the many businesses, where the business was located, who ran the business, and what year they operated their business. Finally after four years Sharon had researched over 3,000 businesses in downtown Red Wing from the 1850s through the 1940s and sometimes beyond. Included in her book are interesting events such as disastrous fires, the fatal shooting of two Red Wing police officers, and history of some of local businesses at that time. What started out as an addictive hobby became a book of interesting facts with over two-hundred early photos of downtown businesses, street by street.
