Don't be misled by the title- "Early Hiking" is about early hiking in the Olympic Mountains of Washington, but not about all early hikes in the Olympics. Rather, it's an account of the hikes of Paul Crews and groups he was associated with before World War II. I admit, I may have a bias, as my grandfather is the author of the book, and I acquired a love of the Olympic Mountains from him, but even for a non-relative, the stories are great. They give an image of early boyscouting, and of what hiking was like before modern hiking boots, backpacks, lightweight tents, and before the Olympic Peninsula was as developed. The book not only tells of the author's relationship with hiking and its growth over his lifetime, but also gives some records of early hiking, mountaineering and skiing groups in the Puget Sound and Olympic areas in the era between the 1920's and 40's. Some of these groups are still around now. I'd strongly recommend this book to anyone who's been involved in hiking for long, and has discovered the appeal of alpine meadows, or who just likes the outdoors.
