THE BEST OF THE LOT!

WE HAVE MANY CHOICES IN THE VIDEO GUIDE FIELD AND I'VE USED THEM ALL,YET I FIND THIS TITLE TO BE THE BEST:INCISIVE COMMENTS,HIGH READABILITY,AND ENTHUSIASM.

MAYBE THE BEST VIDEO GUIDE, HOWEVER...

I picked up my first copy of martin and Porters video guides probably close to 20 years ago when the video boom was really taking off. They never featured as many films in their guides as other people, Like Maltin for example, but they generally gave more comprehensive reviews and didn't disregard B movies as many other reviewers did. Through their guides I discovered many wonderful films over the years and generally bought their new guide at least every other year if not every year. Their guides have always been well organized with thorough indexes to find films and stars. Over the years they've continued to add more and more films to an ever growing impressive list of films. The only problem is, and its with any film guide, but in this day and age where there are SO many websites with both amateur and professional film reviews, it's really made books almost obsolete. Even putting out a new guide every year they are still going to lag behind websites which have reviews posted upon release. If you absolutely want a hard copy guide then this IS the one to buy.

A very different kind of movie guide...

I got into movie-review books when wanting to get reviews from professional critics on movies of my favorite genere; horror/ slasher films. I first picked up Roger Eberts and Lenord Maltins books. Un-surprisingly, as most critics seem to despise any kind of slasher pic, they panned pretty much every movie I looked up. Frustrated by thier harshness, I next turned to the Video & DVD guide. I was pleastntly surprised. Whoever reviewed these movies gave films like, for example, "Halloween 2" and "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter", three stars!, while Ebert and Multin gave them below two, probably just because they were gory, and they consider that a big no-no for any horror movie to be good. Most of the horror/ slasher pics. in this book got two stars or more (except for those truly un-deserving ones). It's as tho the critic were looking through a horror-fans perspective! I defintely reccomend this book!

For All Movie Lovers!!!

If you haven't discovered this gem of a book, please do!! This book is for anyone who loves movies! The reviews are very informative, and it is so easy to look up whatever movie you want information on. I also love the section at the end of the book, that lists cast and director indexes. There is just so much information in this book! It's fun, whenever you have a few extra minutes, to just browse through the book. I have found movie listings of some entertaining movies that I wasn't even aware existed! I always look forward to this time of year, because I know Mick Martin and Marsha Porter will be putting out their newest Dvd & Movie review book!! I did want to also mention, this book is available with larger print, for those who prefer that choice!! If you love movies, you will not be disappointed with this book. So please try it and see!!!!

Almost Perfect

The only reason this didn't get 5 stars is because it does not have as many movies as "Maltin's Movie and Video Guide." I buy "Maltin's Move and Video Guide" on odd numbered years and "Video and DVD Guide" by Martin and Porter on even numbered years. Maltin has the best, most comprehensive movie reviews and Martin and Porter have the best cast index. Between the two you can find everything you could possibly want!
