Duran Duran, are a new wave and synthpop band, formed by John Taylor and Nick Rhodes during 1978, in Birmingham, UK, having developed from alternative sensations in 1982, into mainstream pop stars by 1984. Music style fashions challenged the band during the late '80s, with its membership changing, before a resurgence during the early 1990s. The group were one of the leaders of the MTV-driven "Second British Invasion" of the US, having had 14 hits entering the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart, with 21 in the Billboard Hot 100, selling over 100 million records worldwide. The band were considered part of the New Romantic scene when they first emerged, along with groups including Spandau Ballet, Japan and ABC but soon left this behind, using fashion and marketing to build a more refined and elegant look. Duran Duran received many awards during their career, with 2 Brit Awards, including the 2004 award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, 2 Grammy Awards, an MTV Video Music Award for Lifetime Achievement, and a Video Visionary Award from the MTV Europe Music Awards. They were also given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The band were lifted into the mainstream by the introduction of the 24-hour music channel MTV, with many of their videos being shot on 35 mm film, which gave a much more polished look than those of most other groups. Their collaboration with professional film directors improved their quality even further, the band having often linked up with Australian director Russell Mulcahy for some of their most memorable videos. The group were early innovators with video technology during 1984, in their live stadium shows. Duran Duran were formed by keyboardist Nick Rhodes and bass guitarist John Taylor, later being joined by drummer Roger Taylor then after many changes in membership, guitarist Andy Taylor and lead singer Simon Le Bon, these 5 forming their most successful line-up. They've never disbanded, but after Andy and Roger Taylor left in 1986, former Missing Persons American guitarist Warren Cuccurullo became a member from 1989 to 2001, as did American drummer Sterling Campbell from 1989 to 1991. The original 5 members reunited during the early 2000s, with Andy Taylor again leaving in mid-2006, before guitarist Dom Brown began working with the band as a session player and touring member.
