Manfred Augustus Maximilian "Red" von R?ssel is a lieutenant in the Prussian Army and the second son of Baron Johann von R?ssel, a prominent landowner in East Prussia. After an heroic stand at the Battle of Jena (October 1806) Red is wounded by a deserter. He manages to make his way to Dresden, the capital of Saxony. He finds sanctuary with the widowed Anna Katharina Winkler, a porcelain shop owner, while he recovers.Red is introduced by others in the Saxon capital to the Princess Wilhelmine "Mina" von Pockenberg, a more suitable companion than Anna, a shopkeeper and serf's daughter. Despite the mutual attraction between Red and Anna, he leaves Dresden and resumes his military career, earning further medals for his actions at the Battle of Eylau (February 1807).Mina presses her father the Prince to arrange for her marriage to Red. When word reaches Dresden that Red has been wounded at Eylau, she sets out with her entourage for Heiligelinde, the East Prussian home of the von R?ssel family to be with him as he recovers. After Red's departure, Anna's talents as a painter draw her into the highest levels of Dresden society. To protect her porcelain business and her lucrative artistic endeavors, she eventually becomes the mistress of a leading nobleman of the city, the Count Gerhard von Lange. She accompanies the Count to Heiligelinde to retrieve Mina, who in fact bolted to the von R?ssel estate to escape her arranged marriage to a leading but older Saxon noble.
