Not a movie about books

...but rather a book about movies. There is little endearing about books that quickly go out of style because of their pop culture references that become fast anachronistic. Thorne has managed to add a timeless component to his protagonist's taste in movies that draws from Hornby as much as from Scoresese. The quick-paced, teasing prose moves the reader through a breakup and a new relationship with deft, not slipping into cliche, substituting instead the convention of talking about movies. As has once been said, it's not who you are, it's what you like. This subtle characteristic of Thorne's GenX perspective is done well and leaves you wanting to go out and watch so many of the movies he speaks about. And yes, it is a novel view on the London dating scene.
