Good book based around an innovative idea

The hero, a mathematician and soldier, is cast far forward in time and takes the place of a miltary officer in a decadent army. The strength of this book is that it is easy to read and shows a large amount of originality. I leave it to you to decide what its weaknesses are. Not a "must read", but an entertaining couple of hours.
