"Hostage Heart" is the sixth in a series of novelizations on the 1980s "Dallas" TV series. The books come from the Soaps & Serials imprint of Pioneer Communications Network, which also did similar novelizations of TV's "Guiding Light," "Days of Our Lives" and "Dallas" spinoff "Knots Landing," among others. There are at least 14 books in the "Dallas" series. This one is based on the second-season episode "Triangle." Lucy Ewing is enthralled by country-music Garnet McGee, who turns out to be the sweetie of Ray Krebbs. Lucy wants to pursue a country-music career of her own, and J.R. -- after seeing Ray's date at a party -- wants to pursue Garnet herself. He woos her with a recording contract with the best studio in Dallas, and he gets her "exclusive services" in exchange. Lucy is jealous that Ray is starry-eyed over Garnet (this takes place, of course, before the "Dallas" revelation that Ray is Jock Ewing's son). When J.R. doesn't agree to help her recording career, Lucy blabs to Ray about J.R. and Garnet. And that gets rather yucky. There's not much of Pamela and Bobby in this book, unlike the others. Sue Ellen, pregnant with a child that might belong to Cliff Barnes, also fades into the background. But this book does take a little more time explaining the motivations and psychology (for lack of a better word) of the characters.
