I got this book for my 6th birthday and now I'm reading it to my kids. Lovely tempo and simple, almost poetic descriptions. Previous review was perfectly correct. Here is a passage: Baby's eyes were bright-beautiful. Sparkling gold, black-centered! He called her Tiny Toad. and... She listened to Night sounds of crickets and cicadas, her eyes two huge, rolling moons. I'm now hunting for more stories by this author.
A sweet, sad tale for parents and children

This was one of my favorites when I was a child, and I think it bears reading over and over again. Doctor Rabbit finds an abandoned tadpole and raises her to froghood. The cast of characters, including Nurse Mouse and others, is irresistable. And though the story is one of the sweetest there is, it is truly simple and sincere, with no trace of Disney-like saccharine. The ending is bittersweet, because even orphaned tadpoles grow up one day, but this ending is one of the things that makes this such a special story for a parent to read with their still-small child.
