I've read reviews that are to say the least unkind to Mark Smith's later works. Yes, The Death of the Detective is one of the greatest literary achievements of the last century. Doctor Blues is such a different animal, it might have been written by another author. This work is much lighter - and it grows on you as you read it. It is great fun. I found myself laughing out loud in some parts, which is incredible for me. A great hearted but self-centered and frivolous professor finds himself and his place in the universe through disingenuous self-examination, a murder investigation he is helping the police to solve, that he is also a suspect of, embracing his estranged children, and finally the end which is absolutely touching in its honesty. I took the title of my review from the penultimate chapter.
