Valuable resource geared towards child inteventions

Working on a voluntary basis with Autistic teenagers, while researching and developing an intervention program, has brought me into contact with a world of research literature, instructional manuals and 'snake oil', that I never before contemplated. Quill's book stands out as well researched, with solid practices. Quill is careful to document the steps in the pedagogical process and the outcomes that are possible as a result. The purposes and methodology behind each lesson are very precisely explained. Parents and therapists reading this book are left with no illusions of the difficulties facing them in effecting even small progress. I have read at least half a dozen texts directed at children's needs dealing with the same themes, and in my opinion Quill's text is among the best. This is tremendous contribution, in my opinion, to interventions for autistic children. Parents and professionals working with high functioning autistic teenagers (Asperger Sydnrome) may find less of direct applicability. In this case, I would recommend also looking at Succeeding with Interventions for Asperger Syndrome Adolescents.

Another valuable book by Quill

Do-Watch-Listen-Say must sit next to the earlier Quill book (Teaching Children with Autism)on your bookshelf if you work/live with someone with an autism spectrum disorder. Both are excellent resources. This latest book by Quill provides a 'much needed' assessment of the skills most often challenged in a child with a disorder on the autism spectrum, furthermore she provides a very 'user friendly' intervention component to address the challenges revealed by the tool. In a field fraught with 'alternative' interventions, Quill provides a very fundamental and efficient approach to sound intervention practices.

Teacher from New Jersey

This is a must read for all educators, speech pathologists and parents who are interested in helping children with autism learn complex social and communication skills. Dr. Quill's first book was wonderful; this book is even better. It is an easy-to-read book that gives hundreds of practical ideas for working on complex social skills and communication skills. There is a comprehensive assessment tool that targets key areas such as imitation, solitary and social play, communication, conversation and social-emotional skills. The recommended intervention strategies draw from the best of behavioral and developmental research on autism. This book is tops on my recommended book list!!!

Review of Do,Watch, Listen, Say

If you are the parent of a child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or a professional working with Autistic children, this is a must have resource. Social skill deficits are one of the most common problem areas found in Autistic children and one of the most difficult to address. Do, watch, Listen, Say is a comprehensive guide that helps pinpoint problem areas in social and communication skills. Quill has developed an assessment tool that allows for a quick and accurate evaluation of the child's skill level and she offers specific activities that address each area of deficit.

Excellent blend of research and practice

This book is one of the best autism resources on the market! The social and communication targets and activities listed in the book provide a wonderful source of ideas for parents and professionals. As a speech-language pathologist, I found the assessment section to be the most helpful. The checklists provided have really given me direction as to the next steps to take with children. The text is also comprehensive, providing information ranging from joint attention and AAC to topics such as emotions and higher level pragmatic skills. I just can't say enough!
