"Distance" is what one would call a spellbinding suspense whodunit where almost everyone in the book knows all the answers and the end, except for you (the reader) and the protagonist/narrator. The latter has lost two years of his recent memory. Things have happened that affect him profoundly -- but he doesn't know what they are. The story unfolds as he swings from blindness to illumination, gradually recovering his past and his balance. The structure of the novel is excellent and intriguing, and the characterization of the protagonist, as he emerges, both past and present, would be simply delightful if it were not so eerie.
