Discovering Jewish Mysticism by Rabbi Dubov is part of a new "The Key to Kabbalah" series by Dwelling Place publishing. I've read a variety of intro to kabbalah books, for the first 6 chapters this book is absolutely the best I've read. It presents the material well, easy to grasp and understand yet brief and to the point. If you're looking for kabbalah in a nutshell, this is the place to find it. The next couple of chapters delve into chassidus, with a heavy focus on Chabad chassidus. While they also do a good job of covering the topic, they present Chabad chassidus as a somewhat exclusive pure edition, which I consider an unfair characterization (and that's with me being Chabad focused). And that's just the first half of the book. The remainder of the book goes deeper into the various concepts of kabbalah, brief yet to the point, not to complex but not to simple. Not for the absolute layman, but making sure a person has a complete and solid foundation in all the basic concepts of kabbalah and chassidus. I thought the book was great, just the right speed, not to technical (some kabbalah books read more like a college level calculus book) yet presenting everything in a solid conceptual system (some kabbalah books read like the author was on drugs). I liked it and recommend it.
