Complete and Thorough!

"Discover The Northwestern Adirondacks" is actually an in-depth review of every hiking trail in the Oswegatchie Wilderness. Updated since the 1995 blowdown, this edition breaks down this region into over twenty areas and 165 specific hikes. These include destinations distance and time, the types of routes (well-blazed to bushwhack) with some `waypoints' for specific popular hikes. The most impressive part of this guide book is that there are many trails that the DEC did not mark that are still described for the avid hiker. Each hike has a little bit of history incorporated to make your experience more than just a hike and there are enough photographs to pique your interest. There are some USGS maps in the back at a scale of 1:100,000, but they are only here to give you a general idea of where each hike is located. You can obtain more reliable maps through the internet or a favorite of mine is a DVD called, National Geographic Adirondack Park Explorer 3D", where you can do a virtual hike on your computer and print out your own maps. This is only one of eleven "Discover the Adirondacks" four-season guides. Four people contributed to this guide and the work shows.
