A book every Christian should read

To begin with, this is the first book on the subject of discipleship that I've ever read, so I don't know how it compares to others. In fact, I believe it is the first Christian book I've ever read to the finish, not only because it was an easy read of 108 pages, but it was so absolutely chock full of truths and revelations that I determined to go through it a second time and underline them. Nearly every line got underlined! Here are some of the best examples, quoted straight from the book: 1) Every disciple is a believer, but not every believer is a disciple! Jesus clearly calls all believers to be disciples. When we fail to respond to His call, we fall short of his perfect will. 2) . . . let's examine what is meant by the word "disciple," and its root word, "discipline." These are words that many people recoil from because they don't want to discipline themselves or wait for what God wants to do in their lives. 3) He (Jesus) is not looking for people to be called Christians in name only; He is looking for people who will commit their lives to becoming disciples! 4)(In reference to Luke 9:57-62) We simply can't say, "Lord, let me first. . . " If He is Lord, HE must be first. If we come first in any way, then for all practical purposes He is not Lord of our lives. 5) One easy way for a doctor to know if a person is healthy or not is to check their appetite. When there isn't any appetite, it usually means something is wrong. In the same way, some Christians don't have an appetite for the Word of God. 6) If we allow ourselves to be fed from the things of this world, it will dull our appetite for the Word and pull us away from the Lord. The biggest eye-opener for me was when Laurie was speaking about why more Christians don't share their faith with non-believers. To quote, he said, "If we were brutally honest, many of us would have to admit that we really don't care about the plight of the non-believer." Wow! That was more like a slap in the face! I'd never really thought about the exact reason for my failure to witness, but that pretty much hit the nail on the head! This shameful revelation put me in a new perspective as a Christian. In the course of seven chapters, Laurie's book spells it out in simple English exactly what Jesus expects of all of us as Christians. His book has had such a profound effect on me and he has certainly achieved his goal of putting me in a new perspective as a Christian. No longer will I claim to be a Christian simply because I've asked Jesus into my heart, I go to church faithfully, and I try to be a good person. I will claim to be a Christian, because I will be HIS DISCIPLE! Greg Laurie is a very gifted writer and I am very much looking forward to reading more of his books.
