It has been twelve years since the Battle of Dalieru, and Fox is now a happily married coffee dealer with a comfortable life. Meanwhile, a second implanted embryo has been discovered still alive - just - on Earth, and it falls to Fox and McConnaghey to go and fetch them and explain that they are an alien. This should be relatively simple, but an old colleague, the reptilian skaatian Wixnel, calls in a favour and things start to get more complicated. It seems that an old enemy has reappeared, this time on the colony world of Vanaheim. Fox, McConnaghey and Wixnel set off to investigate. Just to add insult to injury, his wife doesn't seem to want to talk to him. Situation normal.....
