Richardson's tally of free and slave states gives a central focus to his account of the genesis of the various state flags. A rare and important item in American history. Richardson also loads his account with specific insights that do not detract from the main theme. All in all, a fine little book.
Small but powerful book

This small, easy-to-read book is a powerful tool for understanding the context of each state's admission to the Union. Although each state is dealt with briefly, he covers a lot of ground in the words he chooses. As a teacher/home educator, I appreciate the running tally of north vs. south states and the progressive maps. These help to simplify things even further for an overview of this history. It's a great book by itself for a general overview of the time period, or can be used as a launching point for more in-depth research. This is a great little find!
