very good but not well known intro to ODE's

A good modern text on Diffy-Q's that is much better than most of the mass produced ODE books that I have seen in recent years. One thing that really caught my eye about this book is the way it treats the simple ODE dot(x) = ax in the first chapter. This diffy-q really has three domains of solution depending on the sign of x. Most books use the god-awful ln(abs(x)) (which really is not a legit anti-derivative of 1/x: see Lang "A First Course in Calculus") This is one of many small things that the author takes the time to treat with proper care. Overall, excellent explanations and topics. Even Lyapunov functions are discussed in this intro text. I was also impressed with the footnote references to classic and scholarly texts. Rare to find any references at all in mass market textbooks much less ones to the masters Ince, Arnold, or Coddington. This book was a very pleasant surprise.

Excellent text, sadly out of print

I had the pleasure of using this book for a course taught by the author at Carleton College. It is, to my knowledge, the best book on its subject, with well-written explanations and good example problems. It does occasionally demand too much of students, as when it introduces applications in electronics, which I didn't think were adequately explained. Still, this is a fine introduction. Note that the "Facsimile" edition of this book is in black and white, whereas the original printing had blue as well, making it much more readable. If you seek out a copy of this book, try to find a non-facsimile.
