Simplicity

There are many levels or seasons of a person's spirituality. For some it begins with anger and hostility -- hatred toward God. For some, it begins at a place of hopelessness. And for others it simply begins at a place of a thousand questions and doubts. But, hopefully, wherever it begins, a person will find themselves at a place of peace and total obedience to God. Having said that, let me say that wherever you are on your spiritual path, Pastor Bob Coy has been there too. I used to attend the church he pastors when it was still in a warehouse there in Ft.Lauderdale (I have since moved a few hours from there). It has since grown, well, let's just say, considerably larger to say the least. People are drawn to his plain and matter of fact way of speaking that is mixed with just the right amounts of humor, levity and sincerity. This book is Pastor Bob. He keeps it simple and brings it to the level of "every man." God is not complicated, though we so often make Him out to be that way. In this book, Pastor Bob helps bring simplicity and understanding to the word of God. The following is an excerpt from this most excellent book, the dictionary slash devotional so appropriately titled, "Devotionary." PRAYER It was one of those days. You've had them. Your "to do" list is longer than your day, and it seems every interruption that can occur does. I was having one of those days when he came by. I was tempted to not even answer the knock on the door, but that still, small voice reminded me of my longing to surrender completely to the Sovereign One. I could tell by the look on his face that he had something very important to share. "O.K.," I bargained, "I'll listen, but I won't invite him in. That will keep it short and focused. If I just stand here in the door, he'll get the message that I don't really have time for him, but it won't be totally rude." The thought hadn't even had full play when I realized how shallow my self-centeredness resounded in the throne room of God. He began to shuffle and look uncomfortable when the Lord finally broke through my self-made agenda and put this broken heart first on my list. I aske dhim to come in. As I shut the door behind us, before we could even reach the couch, he broke down in tears, pouring out his anguished heart and soul. How many times do we stand at the door of prayer, not really wanting to engage in a time consuming exchange. We just want to download and be done. It is for this reason that Jesus told His disciples to go into their prayer closet and "shut the door." Only behind closed doors can real transparency and intimacy occur. When we shut the door, we say to Jesus that the day is His. We are inviting Him to get as personal and close as he wants...
