A Must

I own a tone of German books but this one is the best so far. It is a real ABC type of book if you have access to a native speaker to help you with the exercises. This book is if I am not mistaken the book that UC Berkeley used for their German Program. I think the book could be better supported with more exercises combined with a lot of audio for each exercises but all around a good book. Laboratory Manual to accompany Deutsch: Na klar! Excellent book

Finally a well thought out book. Very often German text books present awkward German and the texts seem translated from English to German. That might very well be a reason why those books seem easier to follow, but they do not teach you to speak like a German. In this book, all texts are authentic and reflect the way German is used in German speaking countries. Some complaints from other reviewers are about that this book does not work as a teach-it-yourself book, but that is not the goal of this book. It is meant to be used in class. Exercises are engaging and interesting and reflect real life experiences. This book makes it fun to learn German.

Wonderful College Text

This is a textbook for classroom use as opposed to self study. My two semesters of german at Penn was quite enjoyable; the textbook introduced a lot of grammar points clearly and you build vocabulary through studying themes for each chapter. I can't wait to go to Germany this summer. If your instructor chose this book for you, it is worth the price. The workbook and lab manuals are pretty easy to keep up with, so you won't feel too lost learning a new language.

A beautiful book, easy to use and learn from

I have taken two semesters of college German using this book and so far, pretty good! We are in Kapitel 7 right now. I like the pictures and the realia. But I feel it gives enough grammar, too. The explanations are really clear. The accompanying materials are good, too.Unfortunately, I don't think it is a self-teaching book. It really demands a classroom, and a TV/VCR. Though it is expensive, it is worth it!
