Among the best contemporary horror novels...

...Deus-X weaves a tapestry of seemingly-unrelated events, draws together the threads, and culminates in one of the most chilling finales in modern fiction. This is without a doubt Citro's most ambitious venture, and it succeeds admirably; en route, he pauses to indelibly create characters like little Lucy, whose fate and face has haunted me since I first read this novel a decade ago. What if all paranormal phenomenon manifests a singular, implacable reality? As they say, the Devil's in the details... if Devil there be; Citro posits a universe where such simplistic concepts of good and evil are pathetically inadequate. Though many consider Deus-X Lovecraftian, I'd argue Citro has accomplished something rarer: a truly Fortean novel, a grand and most worthy New England successor to British author Nigel Kneale's extraordinary body of work. In that context, one might add that 'The Pit' has never seemed so vast, so deep, and so frightening (alas, there's no Quatermass on hand to save the day). Highest recommendation!

X-Tra Good read

I have read all of Citro's novels, and this is the best, which is saying something. I've never understood why Citro doesn't have a wider following. He's every bit as good, and then some, as King or Koonz at their best. When it comes to imagination, inventive weirdness, and story-telling muscle, Citro has no peers. Deux-X is a complex, layered novel that horrified me, even as I felt myself forced to keep turning the pages. And Lucy--dear, sweet Lucy--she's easily the scariest anti-heroine I've ever encountered. Even tought my skin crawls every time I think of her (and what eventually happens to her), I'm glad I met the creepy little being.

An enthralling, unforgettable read

Rarely does a book come along that is so hard to put down that life goes on hold until the last page is turned. This is one of those books. It is an enthralling read, a truly high-intensity tour de force that looks at things from a totally different perspective. Made me do a lot of thinking, and got me hooked on Joseph Citro's novels. I felt bereft finishing it, as it was too much fun to be over with. At the end, all I could say was "wow."

Flowing, connecting, engaging

Guess I read a different book than some reviewers, but this book is intriguing, engaging, and entertaining. Great airport or deep in the woods reading.

An incredible book!

For those who refer to Joe Citro as the "Vermont Stephen King" apparently have not read Joe's work. The only way to describe this talented writer is to call him Joe Citro. He follows in no one's footsteps, and is paving his own road into the Macabre and Bizarre. Read his work, both fiction and non-fiction, and you will see what I mean.
