Desperate Disguises: Living in the shadow of psychiatric ill

This book caught my interest because I am a survivor of suicide and a person with a depressive disorder. Jo Clancy provides a compassionate and moving account of masks worn by those of us with mental illness who are trying to move through life undetected. I only wish it had been available before my brother became so distraught he ended his own life. I am thankful it is available to me. Reading this book helped restore my sense of dignity and reminded me how much I have to offer in spite of my depressive illness. Jo offers valuable insights into the lives of mentally ill individuals and the people who love them. She provides hope and tangible strategies to those of us moving through recovery. I would recommend this book for all mental health workers so they can better understand the real story. I also encourage people with mental illnesses and their families read this book. It may change your life. It certainly had a positive impact on mine.
Review on Jo Clancy's Desperate Disguises

A very well written book, based on the writer's personal and professional experiences. A must have for anyone who is interested in mental illness and coping. I also have a personal interest in this book as Jo Clancy is my Aunt. In this book she has included several paragraphs about my late mother who suffered from mental illness most of her life. I can honestly say that Jo Clancy's book is one of the best mental health books that I have read.
