I am very fond of the old, old Harlequin Romances, this is one of the reasons why. Dr Alex Anton operated on Valerie when she was unable to walk, and this gave her the ability to walk again. Valerie had a crush on Alex, but later when Alex needed to care for his niece, Leni. Valerie answered the ad, and got the job. Only to find the hero worship she once had was now full blown adult love. Axel's rather useless brother Rudi falls in love with Valerie, but he lives on Alex's money. Valerie hates this, and although she doesn't love Rudi, she agrees to marry him, if he will give up climbing mountains. Rudi, promises but breaks his promise and goes with a team to climb a mountain, only he doesn't get to climb, he dies before the climb takes place. Valerie feeling cooped up in the house where she and Leni are staying with the Countess Hochenbrunn, she goes for a walk, only to get lost in a blizzard that hits the mountian house. Valerie's walk turns deadly, although she finds the cold now is very warm, and she goes to sleep, but Alex finds her just in time. Later he gets her to agree to marry him. From the back of the book: 'She had loved him for a long time...Beautiful, redheaded Valerie Pentland was alive because of Dr. Alex Anton, who had operated on her seven years before. She had secretly admired Axel and now at 22 was delighted to have the job of caring for his invalid niece. But Alex resisted her charms; if was his brother, Rudi, who proposed. Not until Valerie's life was endangered did Alex face up to the truth of his own feelings.'
