Book Overview

Victoria Laurie's ghoulishly great follow-up to What's a Ghoul to Do? in her new Ghost Hunter Mystery series Northelm Boarding School on Lake Placid has the worst bully of all-a demon by the name of Hatchet Jack. M.J. Holliday, along with her partners Gilley and the handsome Dr. Steven Sable, are ready to send him back to the portal from whence he came. The school's summer construction, an uncooperative dean, and the very tempting Dr. Delicious are...

A Victoria Laurie Fan For Life

I love any story that has the ability to draw you into their world. Not only with creativity and imagination but to actually make you care about the characters. That is what Victoria Laurie does with her writing. You can tell in each story she weaves that she loves to write and is not just filling a quota for a deadline. In this book Demons Are a Ghouls Best Friend you have everything a reader needs (well this reader anyways)theres humor,a little romance, and good not so old fashion ghost hunting. What I like about the ghost hunting part of this story is that unlike TAPS or any show of that ilk when MJ finds Hatchet Jack she works to solve the problem and just doesn't say "yep, ya got yourself a ghost or paranormal activity" then walks way saying a job well done.(I mean no offense to those shows, btw) I like it when the story is plausible, for me its adds to the charm. Here you have a school with a ghost story that the students and teachers know about but don't really want to talk about(Hatchet Jack). Then you have a psychic ghost hunter (MJ)with her friend who is afraid of ghosts (he also a proud gay man with knack of getting MJ into situations in future books--just a quick note)and then there is her love interest who supports her business and is a doctor.Although the Dr. may be good looking and good for MJ, he however is not so good with english. The whole thing come together with plenty of ghostly suspense & action with humor thrown in for good measure. If anyone wants to read a good paranormal, cozy mystery that is just great fun to read~ this is the author to go to time and again-- Victoria Laurie

Great Mystery ! My family LOVES her books!

I always buy this author books but because they are so intense with the psychic plot they seem to sit on my shelf until I have prepared myself to be scared. This book is a great mystery of Hatchet Jack who has been terrifying kids for decades. The twists and turns of the murder mystery are amazing. Be prepared some of the ghosts are children. Great book off, to buy more of her book,Ghouls Just Haunt to Have Fun (Ghost Hunter Mysteries, No. 3) and to pre-order Doom with a View (Psychic Eye Mysteries, Book 7). If you enjoy ghosts and mystery I would also suggest; The Remains of the Dead (Ghost Dusters Mysteries, No. 1) ,Devil May Ride (Ghost Dusters Mysteries, No. 2), MacGowan's Ghost and Crazy For You.

Another page turner...

Demons... is the second book in Victoria Laurie's Ghost Hunter Mysteries, and I liked it even better than the first book. At Teeko's (what a great nickname) request, MJ and gang investigate a boarding school haunted by a rampaging violent spirit known as Hatchet Jack. But of course, Ms. Laurie, the master of twists and turns brings us down an entirely different path. Read on to to see where this on takes you!

a most pleasing psychic mystery

"Demons Are a Ghoul's Best Friend" is a most pleasing psychic mystery. It's a really fun read by an author who gets better with each book she writes. This is a cozy mystery that teenagers and adults alike will enjoy. Victoria Laurie is also the author of the Psychic Eye Mystery series featuring Abby Cooper. As this is the second title in the Ghost Hunters Mystery series, I recommend starting with book one which is titled "What's a Ghoul To Do?". This will help you better understand Dr. Steven Sable and his role in the partnership and M. J.'s life. The first book will also give you more background on all the characters including M. J.'s friend Karen who is nicknamed Teeko. If your local bookstore does not have the first book, don't worry, this can be read as a standalone. The story revolves around M. J., her techie partner Gilley, Steven, and Teeko in their quest to help Teeko's 14 year old niece who was terrified by Hatchet Jack, a local ghost. The school principal and the local community try to deny the existence of Hatchet Jack. Of course the tapes of the incident in the school show only Teeko's niece. You'll get caught up in their search for clues in the hunt for Hatchet Jack. And you won't be able to guess the ending. I was totally absorbed in the mystery plot and the evolving and tenuous romantic relationship between M. J. and Steven. If you like curling up on the couch with a cup of hot tea and a good mystery like me, you'll love "Demons Are a Ghoul's Best Fiend". Read it and enjoy!

Better with time

In a diabolical twist of fate the phrase "better with time" occasionally does not carry the positive meaning most of us imagine. Like convicts who grow stronger and craftier doing time Hatchet Jack has had thirty years to hone his hatchet and attain stunning potency & wickedness in the netherworld behind his portal. Now he's on our side of the portal threatening the future of young innocents. M.J. will have to put her friends at risk to force Hatchet Jack into the underworld and spike his portal shut forever; but, can she do it alone. Victoria Laurie has upped the voltage in this sequel to "What's a Ghoul to Do?" with crackling tension between planes of existence; and between the sexes. And her sense of humor sparkles in details such as magnetic armor & grenades, and Doc's inspired vocabulary. This is a fun read for everyone!
