Demon Road feels less like a coherent story and more like a mixture of interesting little adventures with a broad framing narrative. Its less consistent than Landy's previous series, but it has a somewhat darker tone (that gets darker as the series goes on). The characters are a little less enjoyable, coming off as a little dry and under-developed. The book has a wide range of ups-and-downs, but as a introduction to a new series, it works well enough. I would've personally given it a 3.5, but half-points aren't available, so just take that into account.
