A subfield of computer science and artificial intelligence (AI) that focuses on using data and algorithms to imitate human learning and gradually improve its accuracy is known as machine learning.
IBM has a long and successful history with machine learning. Arthur Samuel, one of its own, is credited with coining the term "machine learning" with his research on the checkers game (PDF, 481 KB; link outside IBM). In 1962, self-proclaimed checkers master Robert Nealey lost to the computer when he played on an IBM 7094. Although this achievement is regarded as a significant milestone in the field of artificial intelligence, it appears insignificant in comparison to what is currently possible.
Innovative machine learning-based products like Netflix's recommendation engine and self-driving cars have been made possible by technological advancements in storage and processing power over the past few decades.
