maybe not as strange as real life . . .

I love to watch the Kennedy Center Honors program on TV as the honorees are generally those stars I remember from my growing up years. Seeing their lives in the documentary and then a live presentation of some sort, followed by the accolades to the honoree never fails to bring on the tears and the goosebumps. Obviously I was a built-in audience for this book by two Washington insiders. What a treat! It was almost as good as watching the show itself. Conservative radio talk show host Jerry Knight is a slightly nicer version of Rush YKW, while liberal columnist Jane Day is a maybe Maureen? But as the saying goes-opposites attract, and so it does. One or the more enjoyable aspects of the book for me was the constant wondering by each of them as to what they saw in each other. Ah, well. Mysteries abound everywhere. This time, it's an aging actress, known for her support of liberal causes that ends up dead at the ceremony. Carla Caldwell has stepped on lots of toes as she climbed the ladder to success, so who decided she wouldn't reach her next birthday? Detective A. L. Jones is up to his ears in problems: the budget for the Washington PD has been cut to smithereens, leaving him with not as much help as he'd like, not to mention a car that breaks down too often. Add in a young man he's trying to save from himself-and the ghetto-and you have the recipe for one frustrated cop. He deals with it all as best he can, but the very last thing he needs is more of Knight and Day. But that's just what he gets. And as if that wasn't enough, an article that Jane wrote has been optioned for a film, and the producer is badgering her for a commitment to come to Hollywood and help write the screenplay for more money than Jane can even imagine. But-that means she'd have to leave Washington. This is really good-and contemporary-stuff. I loved it! And as usual, now I'm off to play catch-up and find the earlier books in the series. I've read lots worse. For a brief glimpse into the inner workings of the folks who inhabit our nation's capital, this is an enjoyable way to spend a few hours.

An exciting page-turner that keeps you wanting more.

Death With Honors is the best installation of the Knight and Day series yet. The characters are superb; you can really feel the bond that Jerry and Jane have for each other. The inclusion of A.L. is a great part of the book, as you are able to feel how the other side of DC actually lives. The best part of the work is that it keeps you wanting to read more and more. Unlike most mysteries, this story line keeps you going and the ending is very unpredictable. For those of you who enjoy inside-the-beltway stories, Nessen and Neuman capture the essence perfectly. While a lot of books are set in DC, Nessen and Neuman are the most realistic. You can actually visualize the action taking place in your head as their depiction of DC is vivid and extremely accurate. It was a joy to read this book, and I am definitely looking forward to another.

Fast plot, sharp insight, unforgettable characters.

Forget your taxes, kids, laundry, dog. Treat yourself to Nessen and Neuman's "Death with Honors"---a great getaway read. Those unlikely lovers--hard-working liberal journalist Jane Day and obnoxious conservative talk-host Jerry Knight---are at it again, racing to solve a murder at the Kennedy Center along with cynical cop Abraham Lincoln Jones. Their quest combines sex, squalor, Washington politics, Hollywood glitz, and six brands of hypocricy with the long shadow of McCarthyism and the passions of the heart. In this third Knight & Day outing the authors know their media-crossed couple better than ever. It shows. A terrific read.
