Surprisingly Good -- Great Beach Reading

Donald Ward is a master of capturing oddball characters in hilarious snapshots. Arnie, a six-foot-six body-building truck driver who listens to La Boheme on his stereo and suspects that if only Mimi had known about proper nutrition and jogging she would be "skipping around" today, arrives home from a trip to Vancouver to discover that his lover Bobbie has been viciously murdured. He turns to Jake Weissman, Bobbie's second-rate theatrical agent who just wants to get laid and has a fantasy life that rivals Walter Mitty's, and to Jake's new secretary, Miss Murphy, an illegal latina immigrant with obvious charms and less obvious brains. Together they sift through layers of intrigue at the Quest Theater to find out who killed Bobbie. This is a great book for the beach. Incredibly light reading, It'll still hold your interest, make you laugh out loud, and you can read it in a couple of hours. In spite of the fact that there are some gay characters, I don't understand the classification of this book as "Gay Fiction"-- unless an obsession with theater and movies automatically counts as "Gay". There are straight characters, too, but no sex and not much of a romantic aspect to the plot in any direction.
