Dear Budd

Multiple Sclerosis weakened Budd's body till he no longer could walk. His sense of humor remained despite his loss of a physically active life. Clergy and members of Lovers Lane United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas encouraged Budd to share his humor, faith, and love of life through a column in the church's weekly newspaper. Enjoy this excerpt from one of Budd's letters. Dear Budd... Because I happen to know that you have a wonderful sense of humor, along with being a most dedicated Christian, I wish that you would take the opportunity to point out to others (particularly, the young) that following Christian precepts does not necessitate either a long face or a forced cheeriness. How about a plug for laughter? Fondly, B. H. ***** Dear B. H. You have done three outstanding things in one letter. You spoke a very kind word of affirmation to me, about me, and therefore for me. That kind of concern is appreciated. You have raised, in my thinking, a most important issue for any person who hopes to live a meaningful life in this day. You have done a good job offering a logical answer to the predicament. I agree - life is not all smiles, or all frowns, or all "can't do's" or "don't do's." Rather, life is a combination of yes and no, love and hate, war and peace, friend and foe... About laughter - I guess, if I've never really cried, then I can't really laugh either. Seriously, Budd Patricia Looper (Pat) is a retired United Methodist Clergywoman. She loves her large family and the Blue Ridge Mountain view from the retirement community where she lives with her husband, Daniel. Reading and transcribing these columns for her family, Pat realized they were treasures of inspiration to share with others.
