The first Kate Kinsella mystery that I really loved

I think it's the screwball character of Vanessa Wooten that really made this movie for me. The hopelessly paranoid (or is she?) client makes a great contrast for the rather inept detective, and there is honest suspense towards the end as to the fate of poor Vanessa.BTW, one reviewer reviewed the wrong book...no haunted houses in this book. Sorry about that.

If you like Kinsey Milhone, you'll probably like Kate Kinsella

Kate strikes me as a British version of Grafton's Kinsey Milhone -- she's kind of on her own and her good buddy is her landlord -- too old to be a romantic interest but someone who looks out for her to the extent she'll tolerate being looked after. This is one of the earlier books in the series. Kate decides to go on holiday (take a vacation) and ends up in Wales, in a dreadful trailer (caravan). She runs into a friend from school, whom she barely recognizes. The friend is getting married and living in her fiance's house on a cliff in Cornwall (remember Rebecca?) The fiance's wife had committed suicide over the edge of the cliff, taking their two children, and Kate's friend is convinced the place is haunted. Kate ends up going to visit to investigate -- her concerns have to do with the fiance, not ghosts. This is a real page-turner -- quick pace, lots of interesting characters, and a romantic location in an old house by the ocean.

Smart and original

In Vanessa Wooten, Christine Green has created an annoying and unreliable victim for Kate Kinsella to protect. She claims she's being stalked, but she's apparently been saying this for years. She's paranoid and more than a little strange. Right up until the end of this strange little book, we don't have any better feeling than Kinsella does whether the threat is anywhere except in Vanessa's head. The book does get tangled up in its own feet at a certain point by introducing too many characters and too much information. Still, for me, it gives a lot of hope for the writer/series.

A Kate Kinsella Mystery

I enjoyed following the sleuth Kate Kinsella as she roamed the town pciking up clues. It was a very light yet intriguing read and reminded me of the TV show 'Murder She Wrote'.
