Gambled and Lost

Ruby Hornansky's DEAD AHEAD gives Nikki Trakos her first homicide case. It isn't much of a case, a small time gambler shot in a deserted parking lot. The chief didn't want a woman in his division. He can't change the rotation that caught Ruby, but he gives her only three days to close and assigns a watchdog keeper to dodge her steps. Not many real surprises in this police procedural, but the plot is sound and the action fast as Nikki works against the clock. A good afternoon read for fans.
