marvellous (in each sense of the word) & completely droll, daydream houses of los angeles prefigures contemporary (2000+) postmodern art & (i assume) architecture school attitudes by 2.5 decades.make sure to read the introduction; it is as clever & priceless as the picturebook itself. charles jencks knows the secret of irony: one must love that at which one laughs. it may be an uncomfortable & unaccountable love, but it must exist.if you dont care all that much for architecture, this book is worth treble the price for its captions alone (topiary facsist, HedgeHouse, baby blue lobster w/ corner frostings, predatory mansard w/ l.a. door, etc & ect). if you live in los angeles, it will drag you by the shoulders & impel you to see buildings you have lived down the street from since you were kneehigh to a cranberry bean in a whole new, slightly nauseating, slightly exalted light...
