Dark and Rich

Day One by Bill Cameron is a fascinating read both for the well-crafted story and the style in which it's written. It's a complex tale, rich with dark characters that, thankfully, most of us don't meet in our daily lives. It's literary without pretension, well-paced and never formulaic. The tone is noir with many shades of composite gray. The writing pulls you in without gimmicks, the dialogue and characters are cinematic. There's a genuine and talented author's voice speaking through these pages. I stopped more than once to reread entire paragraphs for the pure thrill of great writing. This is a complex story about strange crimes with deep origins. The narrative glides through the past and present in a engaging manner as a series of interconnected personal stories and interlocking puzzles unfold and pick up steam until they converge with a resonant bang. Painstakingly set in rural Oregon and urban Portland, the scenery, smells, and regional quirks are conjured with equal doses of sun, mist, and shadows. The author does an excellent job with the bread and butter forensics and police procedures as well as the inner stories and conflicts that drive his good, bad, and ugly characters forward. Day One is the third book in Cameron's series, but each book stands on it's own. I read this first, loved it, and intend to return for more.

Drip, Drip, Drip...

First of all, I'm not so great at reviews. But here is how I felt while reading this book... The cover art could not be more perfect. The story literally unfolds like a drip, drip, drip ... and you just know something horribly messy is waiting at the end. You bite your nails, sit up straight, tuck your legs under you. You want to pound someone's face in, cuss a blue streak, or just hand over a second pair of scissors. And in the end you're left with something deeper, something beautiful. I read romance. I don't venture far from it. Ever. I can't tell you how happy I am that I found Bill Cameron on twitter, and therefore found his writing.

My favorite Bill Cameron book yet.

Some sentences in this book were so perfect that I would have read it only for them. Great story - painful, brave, and kind. Incredibly well-crafted characters. Excellent suspense.
