Love this book

I keep rereading it. Great insight into life during the war... The constant fear of betrayal. Life for the partisans in the resistance. Brave people. I strongly recommend this book.

World war ll, set in Ukraine

A captivating and emotional wartime tale of love, loss courage and sacrifice. Set in Ukraine during world war ll, two young girls are on board a Nazi freight train...filled to the brim..with young and old, men women and children. Freezing in the dark, with stifled air, no water, no place to sit.. no bathroom..but a bucket and no privacy... standing for hours on end..for what might possibly take days days...all to be Taken to Hitlers Labor Camps.Where many will die or be returned home... so sickly ...they are very near death. One young girl is Lisa, who was taken from her apartment, meets another girl ...two years older than her..Masha ... together they huddled on some straw in the corner, Masha reaching into her bag, and sharing a single piece of old hard bread with her new found friend Lisa. As they get acquainted...telling each other how the war has effected them..and their beloved Kiev, The train suddenly lurches to a stop, everyone inside is screaming, crying, scared, falling and knocking into one another. Suddenly the freight car doors open..the sun blinds them..and then they see..men on mounted horses with weapons, guns , grenades...telling them... "You are FREE" ...You can join us.....in fighting the Nazi's...or return to your homes ...Lisa and Masha...go with the Resistance...to stand and fight the Germans that have taken over their Beloved Country, killed SOO many innocent men, women, children..for nothing. They together decide anything is better than Hitler's slave labor camps. . Irina is a young wife and mother, who works in the registering office, doing whatever the Germans decide...to make a few dollars and a ration book..just to serve the germans , and to help feed her 2 yr old daughter and her husbands parents. Irina's husband Maxim... is a major force in the Resistance party..having served in the Red Army as an AceTop Shooter, he leads almost all the battles that they fight against Nazis. From blowing up bridges, telephone lines and truck caravans filled with ammunitions and The hardest thing to find..... FOOD !! As the story goes on..its focused on the several characters you meet from Maxims parents, to Irinas friend Tamara, to the many lives of the men and women in the Resistance. Excellant story of courage, and love ! Loved every thing about the book..from the very beginning to the very end !! Excellant story.
