Stories for Children Magazine 5 Star Review

Reviewed by Gayle Jacobson-Huset, Fiction/Poetry Editor This is the deepest, most thought-provoking children's book I've ever read! It took me an entire weekend to read it and think about it. It reminds me of a book I read in high school entitled: "What Does A Poem Mean?" I never did understand that book, and, try as I might, I'm not sure I'm really on track with what Author Christopher Logan is getting at in his story. But I will absolutely agree 100% with Chris that penguins are the last magical creatures of the Earth! This book centers on Daphne, a penguin who wants to fly. She is the eldest sibling and has 4 brothers (and I just love their names!): Datne, Dis-One, Dat-One, De-Udder-One-OvahDere. Daphne lives a very mundane life full of taking care of her brothers since their mom disappeared a few years ago. She is a penguin who questions everything, and therefore she's not very popular in town. The other penguins like to keep the status quo, so they view Daphne as some sort of threat to the law and order of their well-controlled lives. Daphne is haunted by her mother's words before she leaves and never returns. She spoke about wishes - don't ever share them and keep them close to your heart, or the Council might try to take it away from you. She and Datne shared everything, so she told him one evening about her wish to fly and why she wanted to do this. Datne never told anybody about his beloved sister's wish, but somehow, the entire town found out about it, and Daphne was about to face the dreaded Council. She was more determined than ever to hold on to her wish to fly, and no Council was going to stop her! Was somebody eavesdropping on the sister and brother when Daphne told Datne her very secret wish? Did Daphne ever get her wish? You'll just have to read this fun book to find out. I give this book a High Five for it's thought-provoking plot, it's beautiful, richly-written text, and the adorable names of the characters - three bunnies that are only out at night - the Dusk Bunnies; the Council Members - Rufus Alfar and Balthum Lazlo. Just like real penguins - very dignified indeed! This is not your ordinary children's book, but it's sure to get the older kids involved and interested in the extraordinary plot. They will also be charmed and fascinated by the lives of these very magical penguins.

Believe in your wishes!

When Daphne's mother mysteriously vanishes, Daphne is left with the responsibility of caring for her four brothers. She's a good penguin and loves her brothers dearly, so she embraces this task cheerfully, providing a loving and nurturing home for them all. But secretly she wonders what happened to her mother, and hopes that one day they will see each other again. As all penguins do, upon reaching their fourteenth birthday, Daphne must present her secret wish to the elders. This process terrifies her, since her wish is to fly, and this is something that is forbidden for penguins. But her longing is so strong - could it possibly come true? Christopher Logan's artistry shines in this book, as he paints the picture of black and white penguins collecting colorful objects to brighten the drabness of their everyday existence. The use of funny and clever character names is also endearing - especially the "Dusk Bunnies" and the names of Daphne's brothers. But it's his message that we all have wishes that need to be fulfilled that's at the core of this book. Told in a folklore manner, Daphne reveals to us that wishes can come true, if we want them with all our being. Full of magic and mystery, this heart-warming story will leave you believing miracles can happen in your own life. Reviewer: Alice Berger, Bergers Book Reviews
