The genus Danio is made up of 25 species. The name 'danio' is derived from the Bangla name dhani, which means "of the rice field." Danios are native to the fresh water rivers and streams of South and Southeast Asia. Most Danios have two pairs of long barbels (which look like whiskers), a long horizontal stripe, vertical bars and neat rows of spots.
