Danger on the Quarry Path, #4 of the Boarding House Adventure Series, by Meg AshleyThis is an unusual story, one of the best I've ever read. It was apparently written for teenagers but has surprising depth for such a short book (139 pages). The characters are fully real and believable, as is the way they interact with each other; the plot is great, and God and Christianity are woven seamlessly throughout. It's a rare writer (in my limited experience) who can make something of this quality -- without using a standard "romance" or "Christian" theme, too! If I were to compare it to "Phoenix Rising" by Karen Hesse, I would say Hesse's book is like a cold blue Picasso painting next to Ashley's book -- which reminds me of a vibrant Norman Rockwell. Picasso I glance at once, "That's neat," and pass on. But a Norman Rockwell I buy, tack up, and look at again and again. (No offense to Hesse or Picasso fans.) :)The only other Boarding House I've read was #1, "Secret of the Old House". It was fine, but "Danger on the Quarry Path" is definately better. Too bad it's out of print!
