"This Cherished Land" is the eighth in a series of novelizations on the 1980s "Dallas" TV series. The books come from the Soaps & Serials imprint of Pioneer Communications Network, which also did similar novelizations of TV's "Guiding Light," "Days of Our Lives" and "Dallas" spinoff "Knots Landing," among others. There are at least 14 books in the "Dallas" series. This book begins in the second-season episode "Home Again," right after Bobby's been recovered from his kidnapping. Garrison Southworth was assumed dead, but he drops in on Southfork to see his sister Miss Ellie after 20 years. J.R. and Jock immediately smell trouble, and they make no qualms about airing their concerns. But Ellie has decided to honor her late father's request and give Southfork to Garrison (her father had willed it to him, and only his alleged death had reverted the ranch to Ellie's name). Garrison, along with his lovely young companion, are shocked by J.R.'s blatant accusations. They storm off Southfork, hurt. Bobby and Pam go to see Garrison the next day, and they learn that his companion is really his full-time nurse, and Garrison is dying. Bobby tells Miss Ellie, who immediately goes to Garrison to make amends. She has him move onto Southfork, where he dies 10 days later. In the second half of the book, based on the episode "For Love or Money," the pregnant Sue Ellen has been embarrassed by J.R.'s open philandering one too many times, so she angrily confronts him, then returns to Cliff's arms. Her mother and sister arrive in Dallas, taking up an apartment and planning to stay awhile. J.R. is taken aback when he sees Sue Ellen's sister Kristin for the first time in years -- she's quite grown up! Cliff gets an offer to head up the brand-new Office of Land Management, but the offer has strings attached. Ben Maxwell and his associates want Cliff to OK a shady downtown development project. Sue Ellen makes the difficult decision to actually leave J.R. for Cliff, and J.R. promptly has her tailed, learning who her new lover is.
