A handy guide to staying healthy

When not one but four relatives gave me this book over the holidays, I knew they were trying to tell me something: you need to slow down on the bacon. So I've been using this book a lot. The basic idea is simple, and easy to follow: food contains cholesterol, ergo don't eat food. Some of you are probably thinking, "Oh but you need food in order to survive and I want to survive and I'm not really committed to a healthy lifestyle because I'm whiny and lazy and you've got to eat to live, don't you?" to which I can only reply: WRONG. For instance, this morning I had a cup of Earl Grey tea, and a piece of Dentyne Ice. For lunch I will drink a cup of chicken broth and suck eactly half of one pineapple Lifesaver. Dinner, (which is my favorite meal so I really go all out), will be a threee-second shot of Pam sprayed directly on my tongue followed by two stalks of celery soaked in salt water, with a NutriGrain bar for dessert. I've been doing it this since New Year's, and the results are stunning. I'm having trouble keeping my vision focused so it's hard to see exactly what I look like in the mirror, and my teeth feel really loose lately, but the compliments I've gotten from people! "You look really skinny!" "You've dropped down a few pants sizes!" "I can see each one of your ribs right through your shirt!" Also, congrats to Reader's Digest for not capitalizing the title of their book, which could of scared of a lot of people afraid of proper nouns.

It worked for me - great book

Ater reading this book and following the advice I lost 30 pounds, my Triglycerides went from 266 to 53, my HDL went from 30 to 42 and my LDL went from 195 to 151, which totally blew my Doctor away, she said she had never seen results that good before, and without any drugs. I now feel so much better, I have energy all day and I was able to talk to my Doctor about cholesterol with some knowledge and understanding of the subject, all because of reading this book and following the advice. I am sure it has helped me greatly reduce my risks of chd or a stroke, and has really made a difference to my life, I even bought another copy and sent it to my Mother who has similar problems. If you have no will power maybe it won't work, but that might not help you when you have a heart attack, the time to act is now if you have these problems, I can't recommend this enough.

Great introduction to heart disease prevention.

If you're new to the heart disease conversation, Dr. Katz's book is a wonderful place to start. The book is about a great deal more than just cholesterol. It's probably among the most wide-ranging of healthy heart books available, with concise descriptions of causes of heart disease beyond cholesterol (including lipoprotein(a) and homocysteine), an excellent discussion of inflammation and the metabolic syndrome, good though brief discussions of several supplements (including coenzyme Q10 for people taking statin drugs, arginine, and functional foods). The nutritional advice (the oddly-named "Live it down plan") is a rationale and straightforward approach that is peppered with lots of easy tips and tricks to reduce heart attack risk. There's advice on dealing with stress, how to incorporate strength training into your exercise program, and an overview of medication. The book is also beautifully illustrated in full color, one of the few heart books that has done so.
