This book deals with what is commonly called mass or collective behavior such as exhibited by crowds, emotional contagions, rumors, fads, fashions, audience vicarious experience, hero worship, and elementary collectivism and movements. While the margins of this field are not necessarily sharp, the focus of the book is on anonymous interpersonal interactions - communications that come from an unidentified source, from a network not clearly defined, or from people one does not control and with whom one has no personal relationship. Because such communication flows largely unwittingly among persons who do not know one another, it is difficult to trace, study, or even be aware of its impact. It is hard to control because, unlike mass media, its sources, channels, and gatekeepers are unknown. excerpt from book's Preface
