Arrgg! There be hilarity here

This book by Ray Friesen, master of hilariousness, is about an unusual group of pirates: Captain Scurvybeard (who's not a very good captain), Peg Leg Pete (who doesn't have a peg leg), No eyes Johnson (who has both eyes), YoHoJoe (who looks nothing like a pirate) and Lester (who isn't ... I mean IS a parrot). Also, new pirates came like Peg Leg Jamie and Gramma. In the beginning of the story, they are "marooned" on a freakishly small island. (See Lookit! Vol. 2 for full story.) The mainland was only a mile away, but they took wood from their boat to build a fire, and Pete and Lester took out the nails for a nail-throwing contest. I got my copy on Christmas morning, and Mom had to drag me away from it to make me open other presents. The pirates were the villains in Lookit! Vol 2, and as Ray said, magically became the heroes in "Cupcakes of Doom"! - Reviewed by Michael, age 11.

Deliciously funny, unashamedly cute

Ray Friesen's latest collection is nothing short of marvelous. As ever, Ray manages to combine wonderfully funny gags and jokes with out-and-out cuteness. It's a one-two punch - Ray draws people in with his solid artwork and character design, then knocks them silly with Pythonesque humour (albeit G-rated Pythonesque humour). This collection begins with our principle characters - an assortment of patently ridiculous pirates and the obligatory talking parrot - marooned on a desert island. I shan't explain the story, as I don't to spoil the plot (which is hardly "The Godfather" but is, as usual with Friesen's work, very witty and sharp), but there are some cracking set pieces and some brilliant jokes here that wouldn't seem out of place in Red Dwarf or, perhaps more appropriately, The Secret of Monkey Island. Friesen is remarkably good at what he does, and Cupcakes Of Doom is a superb collection of probably his finest work to date. Fans of good comedy (or, at the very least, pirates) will adore this work. Buy it, read it, love it. And remember: Whoever has the biggest hat wins! :)
