A Cinderella Story

Carolita Blythe is a gifted storyteller. The Cricket's Serenade is written in authentic Jamaican dialect. Her description of Jamaica is vivid. I like how the main character, Souci Alexander, evolves into her own being. Souci, a poor country girl, marries an educated, ambitious man named Lewis, who becomes the Prime Minister of Jamaica. As the wife of the Prime Minister, Souci lives a glamorous and high profile life. However, only a few people know of the marital arrangement between Souci and Lewis. This arrangement causes Souci to be lonely and in need of love. Souci is transformed from a passive person to an assertive person. Souci makes decisions that are in her best interest and regains control of her life. I look forward to reading more books by Carolita Blythe.

Souci Alexander had her safe, boring life mapped out for her in Stepney, a village located in the countryside of Jamaica. She would marry her long-standing, unemotional boyfriend, Greenie, and continue to work at the clinic providing some medical relief to her neighbors and friends. Reading romance novels was her only source of excitement. Through them, she learned about love and daydreamed about it happening for her. Her peaceful existence is interrupted one day when a van stops in Stepney. When Souci first sees Lewis Montrose she immediately thinks he is a character from one of her novels or at least he should be. Her best friend, Michele lets her know without a doubt he is a real man and he appears to have an interest in her. Souci shrugs it off and goes back to her rudimentary existence. Lewis, on the other hand, sees something totally different. He sees a way to help his political aspirations with his black constituents. So on a return visit, he offers Souci a chance of a lifetime in a platonic marriage. Souci, with no other chance at doing something meaningful, latches onto him and his offer, leaving a broken Greenie behind. THE CRICKETS' SERENADE follows Souci from the time she is introduced into society with her initial happiness and the events that will eventually shatter many of her dreams. Carolita Blythe has crafted a wonderful but sad story about two people, a man afraid to love and a woman embracing all life has to offer without fear. In this novel of unreciprocated love, my heart went out to both Souci and Lewis. I wanted that fairy tale ending. Ms. Blythe did an excellent job incorporating the Jamaican culture and vernacular into this book. I was totally immersed in the Jamaican experience through her writing. Reviewed by Brenda M.
