Creatures On Display

The early 1980s in America was a time of sexual freedom. The social revolutions of the 60s freed young people from silly agonizing over the morality of sleeping around. So they slept around. A lot.Epidemiology, the cornerstone of public health, was done largely the way it had been done since the late 19th century. In the field of venereology, it was to interview the positives, elicit names of sexual contacts, round up those contacts, get them tested and treated, interview those positives, and start the whole thing over. The STD epidemiologist was a medical detective, knocking on doors, canvassing tenements, bath houses, taverns. Asking questions, expecting to be lied to. In the St. Louis STD Clinic, Shaun Malloy and coworkers are overworked and under-appreciated, running gonorrhea and syphilis day-in day-out, not at all prepared for this mysterious malady, a wasting disease attacking the gay community. Is it a cancer? A new STD? If so, can they do epidemiology on it? As they strive to understand what would become known as HIV-AIDS, matters are made worse by the existence of a private men's club that caters to the sexual appetites of a privileged class. Trey Vonderhaar, founder of Man 2 Man, sees his calling as social director for wealthy gays, a position that pays handsomely and has its unique perks. Despite warnings from health officials, he is intent on furthering his bawdy enterprise. Shaun Malloy, perhaps too dedicated to the job, is just as intent on shutting down Vonderhaar's love nest, and, along with his best friend, bondsman Teri Kincaid, will turn to burglary to do so. Written in the style of a crime novel, Creatures On Display is a realistic and comic look at the dogged efforts of an in-the-trenches band of investigators trying to eradicate a scourge that has plagued mankind from its beginnings, and maybe, just maybe, make the world safer for lovers.
