Excellent detailing of the young lives of eight Presidents
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 23 years ago
This book describes the childhood and young adult life of eight great U.S. presidents -- Washington, Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, FDR and Truman. It is well written. Chapter topics include "Parents," "Education," "Personal Values," "Settling Down," and others. In each chapter, each of the men are contrasted, showing more similarities than not. This makes for a good deal of learning about all eight men in relatively short chapters. I only wonder if the book would be a more useful resource, ultimately, if each president had a full chapter to himself instead. That would keep a reader who is most interested in a few certain presidents from having to flip from chapter to chapter to find the (subtitled) areas about those particular men. That said, the current format does make contrasting the men much easier, which was the point of the book. Overall, I rate the book 4, which I consider very good to excellent -- I would give it a 4 and 1/2 if I could. It's well-researched and well written and very useful on this topic. I learned things about our greatest Presidents that probably every citizen should learn.
