An engaging portrait of a women's community looking for love. Wilson charts that little known territory--the time before mourning begins, numbness in the face of loss--and she does so with a gently ironic eye. "A sharply observed, cleanly written story of lost love....Wilson nearly faultlessly limns one woman's passage through one of life's commonest momentous events."--Booklist
I read this novel several years ago and found it hilareous, then when I re-read it again, it struck me as very sad. That has led me to the belief that this is a very multi-layered book. The characters are very well drawn, and the writing is excellent. The way Ms. Wilson depicts various types of lesbian personalities and the lesbian community is very true--I've certainly met people just like the ones portrayed in this book. The story revolves around a central lesbian character whose long term relationship has disintegrated. She chooses various ways to try and find a new love in her life. She also, at first, avoids the pain of grieving over her lost relationship. She does this by reading a book about the St. Petersburg Siege, to wondering about various women and whether she could fall in love with them and it could work or not.I think almost anyone of any gender or sexual orientation who has gone through the end of a relationship and the throes of searching too soon, and too desperately, for a new one could relate to this heroine and this story.I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Was shocked, in leafing through your books, to find that this excellent book had no review. I read it when it first came out many years ago and it still sticks with me as one of the best. It has a wonderful moody northwest ambiance, the characyers were engaging and the story well told. I reserve 5 stars for something extraordinarily literary which is a very rare thing, so 4 stars is usually my top recommendation. Barbara Wilson is great to read.
